*257 - The More We Know, The More We Don't Know

Its not something that i just realize anyway...

This hit me again when i was reading a bit bit on quantum physics... and i learnt that that's something called parallel universe... As a pure bio guy... i dont really understand how it works...

Now... it became interesting when people are connecting thoughts to wave energy to quantum physics... And new theories are coming up and one of it was the ability to release a mind energy that may change ur environment...

Perhaps all of this sounds familiar as its emphasized on "The Secret", Law of Attraction etc etc... But science is moving that direction trying to prove what's beyond our science understanding...

Metaphorically, its just like we know that the universe is so so big... While on the other hand, scientist is going to prove that the universe its in a marble or some kind (watch man in black's end title u'll get the idea)

What i wanna say here is the more we get to know in depth about something... The more question will be raised and show that the more we dont know...

Somehow, this is why i like research very much... Looking for things that we dont know and trying to get to know it...

*256 - SciVerse ScienceDirect iPhone App

Yo! Been wanted to share this for quite sometime now... Was thinking to blog more since I acquired iBlogger app but somehow it didn't happen... Hmmm... Ok... I'm lazy :P

This will be a good news to all academic iPhone users... Or perhaps potential iPhone users too... In research, literature review plays a very major part... and I believe this addition to the wide range of iPhone apps indeed increases my iPhone value...

The new SciVerse ScienceDirect iPhone app is out! Best part bout it it's FOC!

"Need full-text but not at your desk? The SciVerse ScienceDirect iPhone app doesn't restrict your brainwaves to the workplace; now you can find and read any Elsevier article or book chapter while you're at a conference, travelling to and from work, or enjoying some rare downtime."

Without subscription, one shall only allowed to view a paper's abstract... but don't worry just yet... isn't ur institution subscripted to it?

What u need is just an email add under the institution's server domain... for UPM student, now u can finally visit to ur unknown or unused UPM email to access the subscription... go check out mutiara.upm.edu.my... u should have ur email of matricnumber@mutiara.upm.edu.my...

Now I understand the function of email provided by the institution... :)

*250 - Looking for "Pay for Biomedical Science in Malaysia"?

Something surprised me on the analytics provided by Nuffnang for my blog... i got a search hit on "pay for biomedical science in Malaysia"...

Actually i didnt really wrote about pay for biomedical science graduate in my blog b4... i just rant before that the pay for biomedical science graduate isnt good enough for me... mayb that's the keywords that attracted the hit... This led me wanted to share wat i knew with all my readers here...

Disclaimer: im going into my final year and obviously i havent really graduated yet... all info i shared here is solely experience and counseling i got from seniors, lecturers, friends and forum... may not be 100% accurate but it will be a good reference for ya... if u found any of my infos were wrong or any good infos to share, feel free to leave comments in this post... we as biomedical science students need inputs from the experienced :)

As a biomedical science degree graduate... wat u really can do with it? Most ppl will go into sales and marketing... promoting pharmaceutical drugs, biomedical research equipment and kits... One of my senior is working in this industry and his basic is rm2k... but it comes with a lucrative commission from sales volume... if u're hardworking enough, u can pump until rm6k in no time...

Another choice is to work in pathology labs and diagnostic labs... For those ppl that dont really like to deal with ppl (you shouldnt be), this is a good choice for ya, u;ll be doing lab job, routine and stable income of rm1.8k-2.8k is achievable... One of my fren went enquiring in a private well-known pathology lab, they offer him rm3k including all the allowance... About the same pay goes to the insurance underwriter...

Let's say we further our studies, im sure there's some fellowship programme that u can apply to... in my uni, we can get rm1.5k as allowance with fee exemption if we successfully applied for the Graduate Research Fellowship... Seems quite good to me...

As a junior lecturer after u finish ur phD... (the info i got quite surprise me) we will be only having rm3k-rm4k as a start (basic la, dont worry)... or an experienced phD will be at 5k-6k... and only after that u hav to climb ur own ladder to more than rm10k or even rm20k as a professor... That will be at least 40 years old i think O.o

You can read more at:
Lowyat.net: Lecturer's salary and prospect in Malaysia
Boardreader: How much can a lecturer with phD earn?

Im certain that one can always do better than these... these were just an average guide... Go out and strive ur best to achieve your goals!

*248 - Hectic Week @@

Whoa... i'd not been resting enough this week... incessant events, activities, tests and assignments queuing up in a long long list...

Gotta freaked out soon... LOL

Came across this words in my personnel supervision lecture notes... "external locus of control"...

Im one of the committee for the Malaysian Symposium on Biomedical Science 2010... (in fact, now im slacking in the main lecture hall :P) As u all should already knew... Organizing an event especially such a big one like this... is never been easy... its very TOUGH actually...

Many things went wrong... and i noticed many ppl are practicing external locus of control... what it means is one tend to blame others or natural uncontrolled causes that caused the problems...

Most ppl only know how to blames others... and we all tend to blame others 1st when anything goes wrong without really reconsidering... do u noticed that trend? So when will only a person will make him/herself as the primary cause of the events 1st?

I guess this is something that we all need to learn to be successful in an organisation and meet organisation goals as a whole...

Try to be aware of these when u wanna blame someone on something in the future... If u really consider the cause... It always everyone's fault :)

ps: now obviously it will be my fault if i didnt get all my assignments done during the weekends... die~ LOL

*246 - How Medical Sciences Works

When u read a medical or health article... do u notice something special bout it? its like a new way of writing an article totally different and unique to other kinds of work...

A very good example which u may be familiar of...
"High blood cholesterol level may increase risk of stroke"

Noticed something? Anything?

I'd been observing these few years ago and i'll say that science, health sciences especially is NOT DEFINITIVE...

So wat do u mean by MAY INCREASE RISK of stroke? does it cause stroke? does everyone with high cholesterol gets stroke? do it mean it maybe increase ur risk or it may not be?

We are studying and researching health sciences using statistic... considering all the variations, exceptions and individuality... everything is in percentage... how u can really understand health sciences?

In my opinion... one needs to know the true pathology, or physiology of the disease... u'll need to know how stroke develop... wat's the process that cause blood vessels blockage in the brain... then u evaluate urself wat factors can affect the pathways of the process...

Whey im writing this? coz most of the time wat public gets from a medical journal or article may not be the most correct info... they may understand the wrong concept... from the above example... it doesnt mean that reducing ur cholesterol intake will reduce ur blood cholesterol and helped on ur stroke...

How much do u agree with me?

*228 - I Hate Worms!

Finally i finish my parasitology course! Cant believe i still make it through ALIVE :/

Photobucket

No more worms please... No more...

Worms cause insomnia, stress, depression, dementia, delirium... and near death experience...

After all those memorizing, im still walking into the hall... BLANK... So dont expect anything k...

*220 - Damn Creative Reproductive Physiology SCL =.=

SCL = Student Centered Learning
Photos courtesy of Michelle

Its the Reproductive Physiology class by Assoc Prof Dr Sabrina Sukardi again! This time she asked us to bring all ur recyclable rubbish to class...

So wat's the assignment? We hav to construct an reproductive organ according to the question given to each group. That's where we have funny creative organs popped out O.o

We hav this Jacobs biscuit UTERUS... Its "fully equipped", comes with a HYMEN too =.= hidden inside the so called VAGINA (toilet paper roll)...

Then we hav a coca-cola FETUS inside the AMNIOTIC SAC... looks like a garbage bag :/

If u're asked to construct a PENIS... normally wat a guy will do? Of course we love making a BIG BIG rocket-style penis... hehehehehe... You sure u can take it? :P

Wanna know my group's question? We hav to construct a BREAST and explain the process of LACTATION... That's our breast... With a sharp bikini on it :D

During the presentation... That's me in RED overthere...

"The 1st step of breastfeeding... its to take off your bikini!" xD

Saw the RED NIPPLE? :P hahahahaha... We got the whole class LOL~

*171 - "Nobody" H1N1 Parody

Holy Crap Mr.brown O.o

I just saw the dance of "Nobody" by Wondergirls performed by my biomed juniors during CAD last saturday...

and now i saw this... The h1n1 parody of the song... O.o WTF

*170 - Boring Lectures Series: Episode 1

I'd decided to start a series of photo blog on boring lectures :D estimating 4 more sems of the same phenomena to go =.=

13082009

Well... introducing our endocrinology lecturer, Doraemon!
Okok... Not this one... we dont hav a round robot teaching us... Its a round human lecturer named Assoc. Prof. Dr. Dollah-ae-mon...
(The best shot i got for him edi...)

Here's how his class goes...
Dollah: Now... I write all my secret weapon exam tips on the board, and u just stare from up there ya...
Then he starts writing those tiny weeny bean sprouts tat no one could see... and explaining the science of travel machine tat no man could understand O.o

As a result, my fren, Ben had to deep meditate to seek answers from The Mighty Enlightened One... See how focus he is...
JZ on the other hand, was so stressed bout life due to the confusion by doraemon until he's wearing this "LiveStrong" band for refuge =.=
While Michelle is suffering migraine because doraemon lectures sound like a curse to her, and Kee had to use her inner energy to force out the dark spirit from within (which i found out its plain stupid since im sure the dark spirit will drown in her FATS)
Even the non-human human from his lecture notes frown...
Or mayb he dont like i take his photo eh?

But hey look... I found out tat our biomed Mama actually works for FBI... See her walkie-talkie earphone in her ear O.o
They must be trying to arrest the alien Doraemon... Oh well... Pity~

Conclusion: This post truly proved im so bored to death.. hehe :D

*168 - Biomed Chinese Annual Dinner Special Moments :D

08082009 (CPP's birthday)

We had our Biomed Chinese Annual Dinner (CAD) at the ballroom of Palm Garden Hotel, Putrajaya. Its an event where all chinese biomed students from degree to PhD gather together.

We already had quite a complete album in Facebook... Thuss this post will only be uploaded with special moments i caught with my camera :)
1st of all, its the best photo showing how aggressively our emcee of the night (JFook) dancing on the stage :D the "Sorry Sorry" dance... but i feel should call "The Kung Fu Dance"... See pic O.o
Next is our Geisha of the table... WTF O.o
Food served during dinner... Rice, Fish, Chicken, Vege and Salad... Hmmm...
And the best is still the Salad!
The big guy in white shirt with vest... He is our "entertaining" representative that got sent up the stage by our table during the game session... U guyz are so mean on him, i like it! :P
This is wat happened when i brought my dearie there... "ah sou" pun kena bully!
"I saw mummy kissing santa claus~" but why somebody is kissing the napkin? Whose lips is tat?
This is the joy when u successfully get rid of ur "spare tyres"... (JFook)
And this is a problem when u need somebody to cover ur "spare tyres" lol... (Michelle)
The pic in the pic!
"Yam Seng" session at the end of dinner... Something tat we wont miss in chinese culture ^^
Ben, Kee, Shirley and Me...
And best of all... The Proposal~ XD

*144 - UPM h1n1 Shut Down

Happy Holiday!

Everything stops at 3pm today in Universiti Putra Malaysia due to H1N1 outbreak! We'd got 4 confirmed cases and 5 suspecting cases... And this number doesnt looks promising... And worst, one of the cases is from my faculty =.=

After the quaratine of UUM last few days... I just got to know that UKM too shut down yesterday... and now UPM's turn... so i guess the h1n1 is spreading fast now... Its time to get yourself a watermelon mask... lol...

I never know that my faculty got so many students b4... lol...

Judging on the peoples faces... Everyone seems very excited for the holiday including myself... lol...

The crowd fleeing away from the premises makes me thought of the scene in those games and movie... Imagine the building are wrapped in plastic with biohazard signs everywhere... And the building is left empty... like the movie "i am legend"... Cool man...

And the bad news is it got my exam schedule all messed up... Holy shit... Dont tell me we'll hav my test 1 together with my test 2... I'll die...

I got 1 week... Free and available to hang out... Any date? :D

*134 - We're Back To The Discouraging Truth

We're back to the question of where biomed will land =.=

I just got to know from my ex-roommate that he is going to left his job as a diagnostic lab officer...

I still can recall that he was so excited on his new job after he graduated... Everything was so challenging according to him... With constant application of wat biomed learnt especially in haematology, he is involved in the diagnosis of disease based on test findings...

Now its the other way round... He saw no future in his career... A repetitive boring pipetting job with little increment and promotions... NOw he is looking into medical sales line...

Lets say u join the diagnostic lab in your 24, where u expect u will be after 10 years at 34? A supervisor post? With a salary of? As i thought... You'll be stuck there till u old and u still got nothing... Unless u own a lab then tat's another story...

Reconsider ur path as a biomedic student... mayb u will be satisfied with a lab work... or u dont and need another route...

Anwyay, now Malaysia needs more biomedical researcher... Not pipetting graduates...

*122 - PA System Crew's Experience

In an event, a few of very-much-important-parts need to be take care of... They are the PA system, Lightings & Stage presentation and Emcee... These are the major things tat an audience will hear n see to evaluate an event...

Since im more on the PA system side... I'll share some of the basics tat needs attention... To make the event HEARS better...

I attended Biomed Idol just now... For a amateur in technical, im impressed with the performance they delivered... Mayb a few advice below can help them in the future...

1. PA system's technical personnel needs to be fully prepared on the songs... Every songs preferably from the computer... Since a song tat played from a cellphone n go through the mic totally sucks...

2. Choices of songs and music is also very important to ensure its appropriate for the agenda... Erm... For example, playing Don't Trust Me by 3Oh!3 for souvenir giving just dont feel appropriate...

3. Fade in and fade out is a basic technique tat should be applied on every songs... Cutting off music right away will sound weird to the audience... It like boom boom boom n suddenly everything went silence... i look at u u look at me tat kinda feel...

4. Wiring... Must be organised properly... Coz every connection shifting will effect the speaker... It may generate noise or piak piak sound which is not pleasant to ears... Try to minimise cable unplugging and plugging if possible... If cant prevent it... u'll hav to turn down the amplifier volume before doing so...

5. To make things sounds good, mic positioning is a very very important piece of art... Coz position of the mic on instrument is crucial to deliver the instruments sound into the system...

6. Last but not least... Channel volume balancing should be done correctly... A song cannot be all vocal but only can merely hear the music... or just the music and cant hear anything on the vocal... After some experience... u'll know when to put the songs in high volume, n when to slow it down...

Just a few more experience on technical then my biomed juniors are ready for the real stuff :) Everyone too learn from thier mistakes...

*113 - What if... Im a Proffesor?

It gotta be a huge blunder... See... i cant even spell "Professor" right O.o LoL
Im kinda curious what's the feeling to be on top of the world... Professors are highly respected and their achievements are recognized worldwide... Not to say they hav a very high pay, but their salary is enough to sustain a good lifestyle... With their proffesional attire and looks, carrying a PDA and hav a personal Apple Macbook, frankly tat's wat i wanna to be looked at...

From wat i see, the opportunity to travel worldwide and meet with all the academia is totally COOL... With all the challenge u'll meet on research, workplace politics etc... Im sure it will be just the right life for me...

Anyway, most Professors are kinda NUTS... As wat my fren Michelle wrote in her blog, they seems like having a unique culture of theirs which normal people thinks its abnormal... The recent encounter was my PAPA, as wat he adressed himself to be, Prof Dr Wan Omar and his fren tat rear parasites as pet...

My dad always say tat PHD is actually stands for Permanent Head Damage, and i believe somewhat its true :D I guesss its due to their self-confidence as a person on top of the world to see things differently and always think out of the box!

Surprisingly, i'd got the urge to try those kind of feel XD... What if... Im a Professor?

*34 - Caffein Withdrawal

Just been through 3 diabolical days... Oh god... I'll never do it again !!! (i think)

Tues night 10/3 - I slept on 7am to catch up on Pharmacology and posted a CRAP blog entry.
Wed night 11/3 - I slept on 5am, finish off my Management.
Thurs night 12/3 - Dinner i had a shot of nescafe. Finish my MGM exam at 10pm. Relax myself till 12am. Continue on my Pharmaco (exam next morning 9am). Had one cup of concentrated Old Town white coffee. and i DIDNT SLEEP AT ALL !!! 7am we went for breakfast in Sri Serdang and there i go, had another shot of nescafe~

I seldom experience insomia from caffeine. I never use coffee to keep myself awake before this. For the sake of Pharmaco, i daringly took 3 shots of caffeine in bout 12 hours. I dont think my body can tolerate that. Certainly i experience stimulation of my central nervous system ^^

The problem came after i finish my pharmacology test. I feel nauseous, headache, irritability, depression and best of all, whole body muscle TWITCHING (i thought i may have sudden insufficient of dopamine which cause Parkinson's). After a while then i started to experience shortness of breathe and TACHYCARDIA !!! What i was thinking was: Am i dying? Everything goes off after i skipped my lunch and went to sleep the whole afternoon.

Later, i was juz joking with NTY that i experienced caffein WITHDRAWAL SYNDROME until now, i found that there's definitely a psychiatric disorder called caffein withdrawal syndrome that there were even researchers to suggest it to be included into the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM). (Lloyd de Vries, 2004)

According to Griffiths, R.R., Juliano, L.M., & Chausmer, A.L.. 2003. Caffeine pharmacology and clinical effects. Principles of Addiction Medicine. 3rd Edition (pp. 193-224):
Signs and symptoms of commonly reported withdrawal symptoms:
1 Headache
2 Fatigue -- (e.g., fatigue, tiredness, lethargy, sluggishness)
3 Sleepiness/drowsiness -- (e.g., sleepy, drowsy, yawning)
4 Difficulty concentrating -- (e.g., muzzy)
5 Work difficulty -- (e.g., decreased motivation for tasks/work)
6 Irritability -- (e.g., irritable, cross, miserable, decreased well-being/contentedness)
7 Depression -- (e.g., depressed mood)
8 Anxiety -- (e.g., anxious, nervous)
9 Flu-like symptoms -- (e.g., nausea/vomiting, muscle aches/stiffness, hot and cold spells, heavy feelings in arms or legs)
10 Impairment in psychomotor, vigilance and cognitive performances

DSM-IV (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fourth Edition, American Psychiatric Association, 1994) and in ICD-10 (International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems, Tenth Edition, World Health Organization), Caffeine intoxication has long been recognized as a discrete syndrome associated with excessive caffeine use. Caffeinism is an older term that has been used to describe the toxic effects of caffeine resulting from acute or chronic use. Caffeine intoxication is currently defined by a number of symptoms and clinical features that emerge in response to recent consumption of caffeine. Common features of caffeine intoxication include nervousness (anxiety), restlessness, excitement, insomnia, rambling flow of thought and speech, gastrointestinal upset, tremors, tachycardia, diuresis, muscle twitching, periods of inexhaustibility, and psychomotor agitation. In addition, there have been reports of patients with caffeine intoxication having fever, irritability, tremors, sensory disturbances, tachypnea, and headaches. High dose caffeine toxicity is very rarely fatal. However, caffeine can be lethal at very high doses (i.e., 5 –10 g).

And so, my symptoms definitely fits. I definitely has caffeine intoxication with caffein withdrawal syndrome afterthat =.= I will never attempt that again... It feels damn similar to a drug withdrawal syndrome, its so torturing !!! Hope everyone that read this, stop popping caffeine like drugs. In fact, its definitely a DRUG !!!

*33 - Night of Diuresis (PHD)

FYI, PHD = Permanent Head Damage. The content of this post is purely crap that shouldnt be used as reference. Still its written based on evidence.

Had one cup of concentrated old town white coffee at 3am. Wonders how much is the caffeine concentration? Seems like its doing adverse effect on me. Caffeine is a diuretic drug in the Xanthine category. For sure its available over the counter, i can even obtain it in a coffee shop =.=

Referring to its diuretic properties, it does increase my urine flow rate (urine production) as i went to toilet 3 times in just 2.5 hours. It somehow reduce my sodium chloride reabsorption which increase the osmolarity of my tubular fluid. Osmosis will occur in the direction of kidney medulla into the nephron. As a result, higher volume of urine will be produced with side effect of potential dehydration of my cells. It may cause electrolyte imbalance with hypokalemia and hypocalcemia.

According to my pharmacological lectures, to reduce the effect of hypokalemia and hypocalcemia, i should take my coffee with combination of thiazides and K+-sparing diuretics. Thiazide will help in retaining calcium ion by increase my reabsorption of calcium ion from my tubular fluid. K+-sparing diuretic will reduce my pottasium loss. I'll choose triamterene rather than spironolactone for K+-sparing diuretic because it wont inhibit my aldosterone function that further induce water loss.

Besides that, I may need administration of IV fluid to compensate water loss from my coffee intake. But the problem is IV fluid that is isotonic of hypotonic will actually increase my renal blood flow and further increase my glomerular filtration rate. Thus, in order to reverse that effect, i'll have mannitol too, to maintain water balance.

As a conclusion, I better not to take any coffee next time as the consequences is so damn confusing and i need so many drugs to compensate the effect of caffeine. Muahahahahaha~

WTF !!! What am i doing ................ O.o|||

*16 - Spirit of bioMAD notice

hoooh~ finally i done the 3 notices design that will be using during the biomed orientation, BioMAD Odyssey... To be more precisely, they are use in the game called Spirit of bioMAD... In one station, they need to search these 3 notices on the faculty's notice board and take a photograph of it as prove... Spent around 7 hours (5-12am) to get these done, although it mayb no big deal for you guyz out there but im the one always short of ideas... swt~ anyway, i need comments and suggestion for these 3 notices for enhancement... i'll take from anyone... not juz coursemates only :)

this is the 1st one i did... biohazard sign XD huhu~ biomed is dangerous stuff...
the 2nd one... biomed syllabus of studies... :P parental advisory for "explicit" content...
the 3rd one... which i run out of ideas edi -_-||| ... so y not something bout the faculty... wifi-enabled~
so... comments?? suggestions?? complaints?? or even objections??

Michelle, if u r reading this, it mayb easier for u to download from here to print it on A4 paper since tomorrow morning i'll be in Penang edi (cant send u online)... hehe... oya... juz a suggestion, better buy new ink cartridge to print all biomed stuff n claim the club :P
