*165 - Extra Lecture To Share 1

30.07.2009

For the very 1st time i attended extra seminar and talk organized in my faculty, Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, UPM... A new breakthrough i guess...

It is a talk on prevention and control of H1N1 by Dr. Malina Osman from Microbiology and Parasitology Department of my faculty in the main lecture hall... i'll like to share some with u all here...

I complaint before on my previous post b4 tat a private hospital charge rm500 for a throat swab for h1n1 screening... and now i know why... The diagnosis of h1n1 is carried out by PCR or polymerase chain reaction... And those taq polymerase and restriction enzyme arent cheap at all... No doubt government also cant provide throat swab to every suspecting patients...

Next is about the vaccine that u read from the newspaper... Gov expecting it to be available in Malaysia at Nov... But according to Dr. Malina, it is just a vaccine for seasonal flu and its not a h1n1 specific vaccine... Thus we can say tat the effectiveness of the vaccine on h1n1 havent really established yet... Anyway, still better than none right?

Dr. Malina also said tat, recently, a research paper published that potential h1n1 vaccine had been discovered... The problem is by standard procedure from WHO, it needs 2 years to verify the safety of the vaccine... so i guess that when the vaccine got approved, we are having another type of flu edi... aiks...

A very bad news is now the hospitals are full of patients, with deprivation of tamiflu and manpower while our death toll is rising... As a reminder, prevention is better than cure... Go learn on H1N1 prevention for your own sake...

*154 - Nutrilite Rally: Cholesterol, The Good, The Bad and The Truth

On Friday night, Nutrilite organised a rally for its new cholesterol lowering product, CH balance that contains green tea extract... Green tea is famous for its cholesterol lowering properties because of its phytochemical actions...

I always like their rally, talk or conference because i learnt a lot from there... They are very professional and scientific in a way... Since its been at least 2 years i didnt join their activity, i decided to go and update myself... Its in One World Hotel, Damansara...

Its a talk bout cholesterol by Dr. Duke Johnson, MD... A very famous preventive medicine specialist... He emphasis on relation of chronic inflammation and cholesterol... And one statistic that u may wan to know... 53% of Malaysia population has cholesterolemia (high cholesterol)... Its more than half ok...

Mayb due to my knowledge on cheolesterol and my level of studies... I guess i didnt benefit much on the theories... but did gain a lot on cholesterol statistics, effect of global industrialism and personal development too...

Met those tat i lost contact for a while, my ex-biology tuition student, new frens and Huey Yen (since she's in the company involved in organising the event)... Best thing about direst sales ppl are they are very positive and excited on wat they do...

*140 - Everything Happens For A Reason

Many things happened uncontrollably... And i believe these things happened for a reason...

We may not like wat happened to us, wat was offered to us... Many of us were forced to choose the undesirable choices in life... Come and think about it, if u got wat u wan, wat u'd missed all this while?

I remembered wat Dato' Sri Idris Jala, CEO of MAS shared during his talk... If you cant get wat u wan (after u did ur best fighting for it of course), dont worry, dont develope rejection to it... Accept and try to move with it... You wont know wat goodness it will bring for u... The more u reject it... the more miserable ur life will be and u wont excel in your alternative path too...

He told us that he always wanted to study law... In fact, he got his scholarship to study law in New Zealand... But something bad (i forget wat is it) caused him to missed the letter of offer... When he realise it, its already way passed the deadline to reply... Sadly, everyone will say, he had to do his degree in USM, not in law of course...

But due to this, he found his wife in USM... and there he got his family and his lovely children... Get to worked in Shell International and now as a CEO of MAS... He proposed a very good question... What if he went for his scholarship for law in NZ? His answer for this question is probably at his age now, he is a very convincing lawyer without his beautiful family in his law office...

Divine intervention... Anti it u'll be so miserable in life and may ended achieve nothing or go along with it u'll realise something beautiful at the end... Your choice...

*72 - Secrets of Business Transformation

Continuation of post *69. Regarding the insight of MAS transformation by Dato' Sri Idris Jala.

#2: Profit & Loss Anchorage
- Know the profit and loss, thus you can effectively eliminate route (in the case of MAS) that bleeds money.

My thoughts: Im sure in life we do make a lot of choices. If its quantitative, y not list out what u will gain and loss from choice A compare to choice B. Be rational when making choices will help to increase efficiency and maximize benefits.

#3: Discipline of Action
- MAS uses taskforce method to solve their problems. The selected ones will be put in a "laboratory" to focus on the problem until it is solved. Full empowerment will be given.

My thoughts: Are you focus enough when you decided to do something? Or you are the kind of "hangat-hangat tahi ayam" person? Doing something u'll need high discipline and be persistent. Be FOCUS is the key. Check this out.

#4: Situational Leadership
- Due to the fact that MAS needs an urgent transformation, Its CEO practice directive style at the beginning. Gives out order clearly bout what he wants. After this, people working under him dont like him, as usual, just imagine ur new boss came in and changed everything. Until sometime everyone realise what is going on and wat to do, he start to change to empowering style.

My thoughts: This principle is more suitable in organisation i think. Did u notice something? Everyone wans and suggest a change, wanna change the boss, change company, change government etc. But when the change applied, nobody likes changes. People are afraid to change. If you know your direction and what you are doing, u'll hav no choice but to ignore ppl's comments until you reach ur target.

CEO's Words of Wisdom: Always start with the believers. When things going its way, those ppl on the fence will join you. When you produce results, the non-believers will join you too. People are funny, wans result but scare to pave the way.

#5: Winning Coalition
- In a Government-linked Company (GLC) like MAS, everything you do must hav gov's approval. Of course, having a good network will certainly help u in leading the company.

My thoughts: One person's success is never done alone. Everything you do, everywhere you go, you'll need friends or allies coalition to help your way. Only then u'll always hav somebody standby beside you :)

#6: Divine Intervention
- This is the part where u wont learn in Harvard Business School. An essential for life too. I'll hav a full strength coverage on this in the future ^^

Stay tuned.

*69 - 1st Secret of Business Transformation

As i promised, i'll share the knowledge i gained from the Meetup with Dato' Sri Idris Jala. Let's go straight to the point shall we?

1st secret: Play the Game of the Impossible

People are afraid to fail. When you are doing something, if u keep thinking will it fail, you wont be able to do it perfectly. To fully excel to your goal, you'll have to conquer ur fear for failure. The power word here is "It's OK to fail!"

To play the game of impossible, firstly, you'll need to set a Olympic-Target! A target that is so HIGH, its NOT touchable but mayb (in a very small chances) reachable. The best will be a goal that everyone says it cannot be done! If u fail nvm, its ok to fail! Why? Coz its impossible to be done ma right? ;) Get ur motivation running, and go for it without the fear of failure!

An example he gave was A man in his 30s set a goal to be a olympic runner for 100m. Everyone says its impossible. But he was so determined and trained every morning, afternoon and even night. So do you think he can do it? Yes? ..... NO! Of course not, he is in his 30s, how can he be the olympic 100m runner? How can he manage to beat the 20yo runners?

NOW. The point is... Did he transformed? Yes... right? He may not be the world champion but of course he will be the best runner in his community. So wat am i trying to say here? Its about transformation... positive changes... Not a matter of winning or losing...

As a conclusion, for playing the game of impossible, u'll be able to transform or change towards your wanted direction. How will u play the game of impossible?

*65 - Breakthrough #2 (Meeting with CEO of MAS)

So, this will me my 2nd Official breakthrough of my life.

I attended the meeting of "Frens of MH facebook" with CEO of Malaysia Airlines (MAS), Dato' Sri Idris Jala under a survey invitation from Youthsays.com. Frankly i duno wat it will be all about for this conference. What im told from the Youthsays blog is that we can ask whatever question to him and gain insights and inspiration from the biggest gun in one of the biggest corporate in Malaysia, MAS. One of the event's objective is to hear opinions from the youth.
I decided to attend this meeting a day before the event, thus i signed up. But at 1pm yesterday, i was so reluctant to go. I duno wat to wear (as in my blog post *64), i duno wat will happen there, and im going alone =.= Keep wondering should i go or not. Its until i reminded myself to be comfortable with the uncomfortable, then i went, dont care wat will happen la...

The event took place in MAS Training Centre in Subang, the place where they train their students, employee etc. Let the photos do the talking after this. (hate to say, i didnt bring camera, only my O2 =.=)
At the entrance to MAS training centre, There's a Big plane model and 2 alphabet "MH" that stands for Malaysian Hospitality.
So i went in, these is the interior of the training centre. We had our conference in lecture theatre 1.
This is the lecture theatre and the crowd is already there when i got in. I still choose a nice comfortable corner seat yest, i guess i gotta breakthrough this one someday ^^
The seat is comfortable and the table tat attaches to the seat is so much better than my lecture halls table =.=

The guess speaker, Dato' Sri Idris Jala and his wife were welcomed by ovation. His managers all address him as Idris, not his title of Dato' Sri or others, sounds like the team are quite close to each other.
That's a very blur photo of Dato' Sri Idris Jala giving his speech. He talked about the "6 secret for business transformation". Part of it u can learn from the management books but most of it you wont be able to learn even in the Harvard Business School. (i'll share the knowledge in my future post as its VERY VERY long ^^)

Let's see... Wat's make him so special? I'll say most people know the Air Asia CEO than the MAS CEO, even in lowyat.net, there are people commenting that "he rather to and meet the Air Asia CEO". In brief, he is once chairman for Shell Sri Lanka, MD for Shell Malaysia and Vice President in Shell International. He worked his way up until government offered him to be the new CEO of MAS. When the time he joined, MAS was losing like hell (-616m in 4th quarter of 2005 =.=), he only got 3 months time b4 MAS to be declare bankrupt. His leadership brought MAS bac in profit in year 2006 and the best is MAS stil makes money in 2008 even when Air Asia was losing money due to the recession. Im sure u'll like to know wat's his secret ^^ (In my future post)

To know him more, you can check out his corporate life in skorcareer.com and clarin.com. There's a brief introduction and an interview to read on.
Next we hav a Q&A session. The best part of the event: He sings and plays guitar LIVE with the song wrote by his son ^^ WOW... tat's totally cool! His guitar skills dont-play-play ar, the best plucking i ever heard. He made the guitar sounds like 古琴 (influenced by his traditional tribe Kelabit music from Sarawak). I think there's a CEO band video in the YouTube! that also involves Dato' Sri Idris Jala, but its not as good as his solo yest ^^
Muahahahaha~ after the event... i went to do something i never did b4 =.= went to have a hand shake, sayin nice to meet him in person and took a photo ^^ Feels so COOL !!! 1st time 1st time~ lol... never in my life to approach a VIP or guess speaker b4...
They had refreshment in the Cafeteria, a very clean cafeteria. Had my fried mee hoon, a piece of ayam goreng, sandwich, kuih jala and tea. Didnt take the curry puff though.

Here i shared table with another Youthsays.com member, named Razleena. In her 27, working in a company that manage the reservation for the australian airlines. Stranger, nervous and duno wat to talk with her at first but no problem in the end cause she is very friendly and the talkative type. Manage to hav a long chat with her ^^

Because of her, I was given a chance to meet the Assistant General Manager and the MC of the event, Mdm. Pushpalatha. Razleena gave a comment about the Internet Booking on MAS website because she had a problem to book her ticket back to KK. Mdm. Pushpa and one of his team member, John (i hope i spelled it correctly) share the table with us to follow up and ask our opinion on the matter. Spent at least 30 mins chatting before i leave. I can say i really benefited from it.
Last but not least, got a souvenir of MAS chocolate cup with 2 Ferrero Rocher and some Beryl's choc. Lalalalala~ (Scary... a very long post this time =.=)
