When u read a medical or health article... do u notice something special bout it? its like a new way of writing an article totally different and unique to other kinds of work...
A very good example which u may be familiar of...
"High blood cholesterol level may increase risk of stroke"
Noticed something? Anything?
I'd been observing these few years ago and i'll say that science, health sciences especially is NOT DEFINITIVE...
So wat do u mean by MAY INCREASE RISK of stroke? does it cause stroke? does everyone with high cholesterol gets stroke? do it mean it maybe increase ur risk or it may not be?
We are studying and researching health sciences using statistic... considering all the variations, exceptions and individuality... everything is in percentage... how u can really understand health sciences?
In my opinion... one needs to know the true pathology, or physiology of the disease... u'll need to know how stroke develop... wat's the process that cause blood vessels blockage in the brain... then u evaluate urself wat factors can affect the pathways of the process...
Whey im writing this? coz most of the time wat public gets from a medical journal or article may not be the most correct info... they may understand the wrong concept... from the above example... it doesnt mean that reducing ur cholesterol intake will reduce ur blood cholesterol and helped on ur stroke...
How much do u agree with me?

*171 - "Nobody" H1N1 Parody
Holy Crap Mr.brown O.o
I just saw the dance of "Nobody" by Wondergirls performed by my biomed juniors during CAD last saturday...
and now i saw this... The h1n1 parody of the song... O.o WTF

*169 - Everyone were so imperfect... biologically...
I noticed something... Everyone too had an underlying problem on their body... Isnt it?
It can be from heart angina (sudden chest pain that come n go) to cancer... After observing everyone from my community, i found many suffered from scoliosis, chest pain, anemia, tumour etc... But we just ignored the symptoms and treat it like something normal in our life... is this so?
The way of living in this era is kinda destructing... Something is destroying our body and we just continue to let this happen... Now young boys and girls are getting cancer, heart disease, diabetes... And ppl are dying at the age of 40/50 because of diseases... Are those statistics of average human lifespan of 67yo is still valid? Coz during the last estimate, its the generation ppl starting to get enough nutritions... and us? now the young ones? are the generation of additives and drugs O.o
Did u ever thought about: "did i do enough to prevent myself from getting ill?"... Everyone tends to say live for current moments... but u too had to plan for ur future... future in the sense of to be healthy or to be bed-ridden...
"1 in 3 will get cancer" u can change tat!

*165 - Extra Lecture To Share 1
30.07.2009
For the very 1st time i attended extra seminar and talk organized in my faculty, Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, UPM... A new breakthrough i guess...
It is a talk on prevention and control of H1N1 by Dr. Malina Osman from Microbiology and Parasitology Department of my faculty in the main lecture hall... i'll like to share some with u all here...
I complaint before on my previous post b4 tat a private hospital charge rm500 for a throat swab for h1n1 screening... and now i know why... The diagnosis of h1n1 is carried out by PCR or polymerase chain reaction... And those taq polymerase and restriction enzyme arent cheap at all... No doubt government also cant provide throat swab to every suspecting patients...
Next is about the vaccine that u read from the newspaper... Gov expecting it to be available in Malaysia at Nov... But according to Dr. Malina, it is just a vaccine for seasonal flu and its not a h1n1 specific vaccine... Thus we can say tat the effectiveness of the vaccine on h1n1 havent really established yet... Anyway, still better than none right?
Dr. Malina also said tat, recently, a research paper published that potential h1n1 vaccine had been discovered... The problem is by standard procedure from WHO, it needs 2 years to verify the safety of the vaccine... so i guess that when the vaccine got approved, we are having another type of flu edi... aiks...
A very bad news is now the hospitals are full of patients, with deprivation of tamiflu and manpower while our death toll is rising... As a reminder, prevention is better than cure... Go learn on H1N1 prevention for your own sake...

*158 - Oily Diarrhea... Fuck That Fish
Still remember that yummy marmite cod fish i had in gasoline, look out point during Yuki's birthday celebration?
Fuck it! Its NOT a COD fish!
Since yesterday im having oily diarrhea... Yes... Only oil came out of me, orangish yellowish oil... Im sure most of u experienced it unless u dont like fish =.= This is wat happened...
That stupid fish is not a cod fish... Its called escolar or oilfish... Taste exactly like cod fish though (suddenly i understand how the hell will a BIG piece cod cost only rm15.90)... The fish stores waxy esters in its body to help in buoyancy... Human body cannot digest tat waxy esters thus it will be excreted through the end of ur digestive tract, as OIL...
This symptom is called keriorrhea, the discharge of orange-coloured, waxy diarrhoea... Its not harmful to body but it definitely cause inconvenience... But im sure i wont be constipate for a while since my rectum is well lubricated =.=
Next trip i'll go n tell the manager off to change tat labelling on the menu... This is misleading! Gotta go threaten them with legal action for mislabel on their products! I will do that...

*154 - Nutrilite Rally: Cholesterol, The Good, The Bad and The Truth
On Friday night, Nutrilite organised a rally for its new cholesterol lowering product, CH balance that contains green tea extract... Green tea is famous for its cholesterol lowering properties because of its phytochemical actions...
I always like their rally, talk or conference because i learnt a lot from there... They are very professional and scientific in a way... Since its been at least 2 years i didnt join their activity, i decided to go and update myself... Its in One World Hotel, Damansara...
Its a talk bout cholesterol by Dr. Duke Johnson, MD... A very famous preventive medicine specialist... He emphasis on relation of chronic inflammation and cholesterol... And one statistic that u may wan to know... 53% of Malaysia population has cholesterolemia (high cholesterol)... Its more than half ok...
Mayb due to my knowledge on cheolesterol and my level of studies... I guess i didnt benefit much on the theories... but did gain a lot on cholesterol statistics, effect of global industrialism and personal development too...
Met those tat i lost contact for a while, my ex-biology tuition student, new frens and Huey Yen (since she's in the company involved in organising the event)... Best thing about direst sales ppl are they are very positive and excited on wat they do...

*150 - H1N1: Not Very Happy Experience With SJMC
My younger bro was having fever, flu, cough, body ache bla bla bla since yesterday... This morning he went to SJMC to seek outpatient treatment... But something the hospital did makes me feel tat its very irresponsible...
Let's make it clear 1st... h1n1 is just a mild flu, it dont need any medication... Read my post *110 - Overreaction on h1n1 first before proceed k :)
Firsty, the government is now trying their best to control the spreading of the disease... it can be done only by public awareness... but the doctor just now told us tat "dont worry, h1n1 is everywhere already, just take off ur mask"... this sounds like she is promoting spreading of the virus in a way that since virus is everywhere, just ignore the precaution...
Secondly, its just stupid plainconsultation talking and we were charged with a bill of rm200+. WTF. No throat swabs, nothing, already rm200. Who wanna go see doctor like tat? and i heard if u wanna to do a throat swab to confirm h1n1, it will cost u around rm500... its ur call =.=
Thirdly, the drug, tamiflu is not necessary for everyone... its just a flu symptom relieving drug which helps u in away and prevent u develop complications... and the doctor did explain this to my dad too... and she said tat tamiflu is in shortage in Malaysia... if we insist to get the drug, they can sell us by higher price... WTF is tat? Why cant the hospital just tell u u dun need it and stop earning from this pandemic =.=
I just cant accept wat the private hospitals did... Rubbish and Cut throat...

*144 - UPM h1n1 Shut Down
Happy Holiday!
Everything stops at 3pm today in Universiti Putra Malaysia due to H1N1 outbreak! We'd got 4 confirmed cases and 5 suspecting cases... And this number doesnt looks promising... And worst, one of the cases is from my faculty =.=
After the quaratine of UUM last few days... I just got to know that UKM too shut down yesterday... and now UPM's turn... so i guess the h1n1 is spreading fast now... Its time to get yourself a watermelon mask... lol...
I never know that my faculty got so many students b4... lol...
Judging on the peoples faces... Everyone seems very excited for the holiday including myself... lol...
The crowd fleeing away from the premises makes me thought of the scene in those games and movie... Imagine the building are wrapped in plastic with biohazard signs everywhere... And the building is left empty... like the movie "i am legend"... Cool man...
And the bad news is it got my exam schedule all messed up... Holy shit... Dont tell me we'll hav my test 1 together with my test 2... I'll die...
I got 1 week... Free and available to hang out... Any date? :D

*131 - Calorie Or Kill Your Body?
Something in my nutrition lecture puzzled me... I always thought tat Nutrition is a course to educate healthy diet to the community... Now i know its not...
My lecturer stressed a lot on calories and the bad effect of excess calories... She gave us an example of choosing strawberry jam between A and B (details below)... She recommends us to choose the lower carbs one, A since its having less calorie... When does making choices is so tat simple?
A=
Strawberry Jam
Nutrition facts with 7g carbs
Ingredients includes corn syrup, sugar, high fructose corn syrup etc
B=
100% Strawberry Fruit Spread
Nutrition facts with 8g carbs
Ingredients are mainly fruit juice concentrates
Analyse the ingredients carefully... u may wan to slim down by taking a 7g less calorie jam... But will the ingredient actually do more harm? What's in the corn syrup? Its a so called empty syrup with no other nutrients. What about the sugar? Im sure its a refined sugar that had been bleach to be so white, whiter than the New Darlie All Shiny White =.=
8g carbs strawberry fruit spread, a more natural product with natural occuring sugar. Fruit juice concentrate will comes with all the phyto-nutrients plants can offer. No added sugar, no processed corn syrup. Which u'll choose now?
The next hour of lecture just got more misleading. Its about artificial sweetener to combat the high calorie intake. Aspartame... Sorbital... Acesulfame K... etc all approved and certified safe by FDA. Erm... are u sure about that? Aspartame been labelled the worst of all sweeteners with 92 side effects associated with its consumption. Sorbitol, a clinical laxative n nerve damaging in high doses. Acesulfame K been associated with cancer...
Now... U choose... Calorie or Kill your body?

*110 - Overreaction on H1N1?
The fear of H1N1 strikes everyone when the number of cases in Malaysia soar suddenly... But did the public were well informed about the disease?
I'd got a personal encounter with a quarantined flu patients... You know wat she's thinking? Let say u are having all the symptoms of H1N1... off to the clinic u went and doctor ordered a self-quarantine at home for 1 week in the meantime waiting for the check-up report... What will u do alone in ur room for 1 week?
Since the 1st day... She'd been telling me so negatively tat wat if she caught the A flu... Will she be DEAD? O.o and wat if her family and frens got it too? She's so worried to hear her brother was coughing outside her room too... and also asking me should her leave a WILL? O.o Oh... Come on~
H1N1 is not a fatal disease... for the some 300 cases in Malaysia... We got no death cases yet... And there's also been only a few death cases over the world... Its just a new mutant of influenza that spread rapidly which results in an epidemic... Thus, government need to do something to control it... Its not like u are quarantined n u gotta die... =.=
Dated on 3rd July... already there are 128 patient recovered from the disease n return to their home... SEE! So... if u got a fever... u better be worried on dengue rather than H1N1... Dengue is more fatal than H1N1... 23,056 cases with 57 deaths up to June 13 this year... (i never know how serious dengue is until i found this statistic...) H1N1 generally cause complication in immuno-compromised patients since their immune system is weak to fight against the pathogen...
Ya... My fren's report came back negative... if not i'll be quaratined too... Be optimistic... Anyway... watch out the next wave of canine influenza though... We duno wat it will turn out to be like =.=

*106 - Meal Financing: In My Humble Opinion
Disclaimer: This post is just solely my opinion. My opinion can be challenged, debate or proved wrong and i welcome comments :)
"Youngster saved the necessary but spend the unnecessary" - My mum, 2009 ><
Cold cuts... or better known as sausage, luncheon meat, deli or ham here... is not 100% a bad thing... They range from whole cut of meat to fully processed meat... Lets see wat a conventional luncheon meat contains...
1. Nitrites and nitrates, which are preservatives, coloring and flavoring additives that have been linked to cancer by the formation of nitrosamines, a carcinogen.
2. Monosodium glutamate (MSG)
3. In August 2006, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved six viruses as a food additive to be sprayed on cold cuts and packaged deli meats. The viruses are intended to protect against the food-borne-bacteria Listeria monocytogenes that is sometimes found on cold, packaged meat products. (Source: here)
4. A very high sodium content up to 1000mg per serving. While the RDI of sodium is just 2300mg, too much sodium mayb ingested n leads to hypertension and so on.
5. The meat are leftover unsold parts from the market... My fren whose dad is a butcher told me before tat the cold cut factories collect pig heads every week from them O.o
What u pay is what u get... imagine wat's the content of the cheapest luncheon meat... =.= There's of course a more healthy cold cut out there but it will be very expensive... So wat i wanna say is... a luncheon meat can save u a few penny in short run but not health in long term, and especially to ur medical bills... I highly suggest to get a whole chicken or so from the wet market... chop it n keep it in the refrigerator for a few meal use... Its healthier, n cheaper in a way...
Fruits... Hmmm... Is actually a luxurious dessert if u wanna save money... A few dragon fruits is enough to kill ur wallet... A person needs fibre... Take vegetable instead... its so much cheaper and yet so much healthier than fruits... I dont object on taking fruits of course... i do take fresh fruits after each meal at home and i LOVE fruits... But if u are saving ur ingredients of proper meal to compensate for the expenditure on fruits... then its a not-so-wise decision, financially n medically...
Soup... Meat is quite essential... but same meat of different parts will make a quite big difference... Enquire the butcher... im sure they will recommend a good piece for soup... Chicken mayb a good alternative...
If anyone are so serious on saving money... Cut down meat... Reducing few pieces of bacon then u can afford a plate of brocolli... A much healthy choice... Think about it...
Lets cut this short... Mayb its time to save the unnecessary n spend the necessary... My thought is tat a proper nutritous meal is much more important than taste, and satisfying cravings... Get a nice proper meal may save u some tea-time expenditure too :)

If anyone are so serious on saving money... Cut down meat... Reducing few pieces of bacon then u can afford a plate of brocolli... A much healthy choice... Think about it...Lets cut this short... Mayb its time to save the unnecessary n spend the necessary... My thought is tat a proper nutritous meal is much more important than taste, and satisfying cravings... Get a nice proper meal may save u some tea-time expenditure too :)

*103 - Great News Feeds: Brain-controlled Wheelchair
A very good news to share to everyone... Toyota Motor Corps had developed a brain-controlled wheel chair in Japan...
The person in the wheelchair wears a cap that can read brain signals, which are relayed to a brain scan electro-encephalograph, or EEG, on the electrically powered wheelchair, and then analysed in a computer program.
This is a very very good news to the world and will help a lot of disabled people... Im impressed!
Wana see one in action? Check out this one developed by University of Zaragoza in Spain.

*95 - Malaysia H1N1 Outbreak Got Kicked Off
Cant believe it... its juz a few case last week... to 39... till 42... and 49... and NOW 68 O.o I guess H1N1 just caused a panic in the country as 4 schools got closed off and hundreds under quarantined...I personally feels that we had an outbreak in Malaysia due to the typical mindset of Malaysians... Ask urself... Will u go to see a doctor and got urself quarantined for days aftertat? Mostly no... The awareness of Malaysian on healthcare is very very low... Everyone thinks tat its ok to juz rest at home while having the flu symptoms will eventually lead to the spread of the virus to ur family, neighbours and then community... Check urself every now and then to prevent the spreading of the virus! Even if u r unfortunate enough to get infected, plz think of others too...
My dad brought up a scenario yest... Imagine one of ur factory worker got infected... Then government ordered a quarantine of the whole factory... Factory closed for business a week or so... tat's bad enough... But after u resume ur business... what would ur customer think? "Hey.. ur salesman better dont come to see me man... u will get my workers infected too!" So... prevention is the best measure!
Get urself a HEPA mask before the supply runs out and increases of price...
Unless u wanna go totally GREEN and get this 100% WATERMELON made mask instead O.o

*78 - The Story of Cackleberry
Inspired post by "Eggs to die for" from Assoc Prof Dr. Lee's (Vivi's dad) blog. (didnt know he never eat half boiled eggs before =.=)
Eggs, highly controversial food due to its high nutrient but very high cholesterol too. There are all kinds of egg eaters, LoL... Half-boiled egg eaters, Only-Hard-boiled egg eaters, Non-yolk egg eaters, Raw egg eaters etc... and i guess its the only food that has so much ways to cook or serve it... except microwaving =.=
Now... lets talk bout the yolk... Yolk has all the vitamins and minerals of the egg in it... The egg white is just only the proteins... Bare in mind, throwing away the yolk equals throwing away vitamin A, D, E, K, B-complex, Choline, Carotenoids, Many minerals particularly Iron and the list goes on...
But yolk is high in cholesterol! Cholesterol is actually producing in our body and excreted if there is a surplus. Now... Some people might hav high cholesterol level in their blood, which claimed to increase the risk of heart attack (half true only, tats another story, mayb covered in the future), and they wanna reduce the cholesterol level by reducing intake. That's a wrong approach.
Here's the case. When ur body needs more cholesterol, eg. to maintain the elasticity of blood vessel to prevent rupture from hypertension, ur body will skyrocket ur cholesterol level. Now think about it, should u be finding the real problem (the disease) tat cause hypertension (a symptom, not disease!) or treating hypercholesterolemia (another symptom, not disease!)? Its OK to take eggs, for the sake of other nutrients. Your body will balance out by reducing cholesterol production. There's even a research suggest that Lecithin in eggs actually reduce cholesterol absorption.
So... Go take more eggs!

*34 - Caffein Withdrawal
Just been through 3 diabolical days... Oh god... I'll never do it again !!! (i think)
Tues night 10/3 - I slept on 7am to catch up on Pharmacology and posted a CRAP blog entry.
Wed night 11/3 - I slept on 5am, finish off my Management.
Thurs night 12/3 - Dinner i had a shot of nescafe. Finish my MGM exam at 10pm. Relax myself till 12am. Continue on my Pharmaco (exam next morning 9am). Had one cup of concentrated Old Town white coffee. and i DIDNT SLEEP AT ALL !!! 7am we went for breakfast in Sri Serdang and there i go, had another shot of nescafe~
I seldom experience insomia from caffeine. I never use coffee to keep myself awake before this. For the sake of Pharmaco, i daringly took 3 shots of caffeine in bout 12 hours. I dont think my body can tolerate that. Certainly i experience stimulation of my central nervous system ^^
The problem came after i finish my pharmacology test. I feel nauseous, headache, irritability, depression and best of all, whole body muscle TWITCHING (i thought i may have sudden insufficient of dopamine which cause Parkinson's). After a while then i started to experience shortness of breathe and TACHYCARDIA !!! What i was thinking was: Am i dying? Everything goes off after i skipped my lunch and went to sleep the whole afternoon.
Later, i was juz joking with NTY that i experienced caffein WITHDRAWAL SYNDROME until now, i found that there's definitely a psychiatric disorder called caffein withdrawal syndrome that there were even researchers to suggest it to be included into the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM). (Lloyd de Vries, 2004)
According to Griffiths, R.R., Juliano, L.M., & Chausmer, A.L.. 2003. Caffeine pharmacology and clinical effects. Principles of Addiction Medicine. 3rd Edition (pp. 193-224):
Signs and symptoms of commonly reported withdrawal symptoms:
1 Headache
2 Fatigue -- (e.g., fatigue, tiredness, lethargy, sluggishness)
3 Sleepiness/drowsiness -- (e.g., sleepy, drowsy, yawning)
4 Difficulty concentrating -- (e.g., muzzy)
5 Work difficulty -- (e.g., decreased motivation for tasks/work)
6 Irritability -- (e.g., irritable, cross, miserable, decreased well-being/contentedness)
7 Depression -- (e.g., depressed mood)
8 Anxiety -- (e.g., anxious, nervous)
9 Flu-like symptoms -- (e.g., nausea/vomiting, muscle aches/stiffness, hot and cold spells, heavy feelings in arms or legs)
10 Impairment in psychomotor, vigilance and cognitive performances
DSM-IV (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fourth Edition, American Psychiatric Association, 1994) and in ICD-10 (International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems, Tenth Edition, World Health Organization), Caffeine intoxication has long been recognized as a discrete syndrome associated with excessive caffeine use. Caffeinism is an older term that has been used to describe the toxic effects of caffeine resulting from acute or chronic use. Caffeine intoxication is currently defined by a number of symptoms and clinical features that emerge in response to recent consumption of caffeine. Common features of caffeine intoxication include nervousness (anxiety), restlessness, excitement, insomnia, rambling flow of thought and speech, gastrointestinal upset, tremors, tachycardia, diuresis, muscle twitching, periods of inexhaustibility, and psychomotor agitation. In addition, there have been reports of patients with caffeine intoxication having fever, irritability, tremors, sensory disturbances, tachypnea, and headaches. High dose caffeine toxicity is very rarely fatal. However, caffeine can be lethal at very high doses (i.e., 5 –10 g).
And so, my symptoms definitely fits. I definitely has caffeine intoxication with caffein withdrawal syndrome afterthat =.= I will never attempt that again... It feels damn similar to a drug withdrawal syndrome, its so torturing !!! Hope everyone that read this, stop popping caffeine like drugs. In fact, its definitely a DRUG !!!
